The short answer
Where do warehouse losses actually happen?
At the gate and the dock, during business hours, on paperwork that looks correct. Operators tend to buy fence-line security, but the vulnerable moments are the ones involving a transfer of custody — a load leaving against a docket nobody checked — and no perimeter measure addresses any of those.
A typical arrangement for a distribution site
| Operating hours | A gatehouse officer on the gate — the highest-value post on most sites |
|---|---|
| Overnight | Three to four randomised mobile patrols |
| Fallback | Alarm response between patrol visits |
| Why not static overnight | The risk is intermittent and the site is large, so patrols usually beat a fixed post on cost |
| What changes it | High-value stock on site, or a yard with plant and fuel worth guarding continuously |
| Travel | Minimal to the western and northern distribution corridor from our Williams Landing base |
What goes wrong on these sites
Loss happens where goods change hands
4 findings
The exposures are a driver loading more than the manifest, a pallet moved to the wrong bay and collected later, a collection against a booking that was never made, or a vehicle leaving with a load nobody checked against the docket.
-
Loading beyond the manifest
The most common form, and the hardest to detect without an exit check.
-
The wrong-bay pallet
Moved deliberately, collected later, and invisible to a perimeter.
-
Collection against a phantom booking
Defeated only by verifying the booking against the schedule at the gate.
-
Unchecked exit loads
A vehicle leaving with a load nobody reconciled against the docket.
Not sure which of these apply to your warehousing site?
We will walk the yard and stand at the gate through a shift change, look at how loads are actually reconciled on the way out, and put the result in writing with a fixed price. The gate is usually where the return is, not the fence line.
What we do about it
What gatehouse control produces beyond deterrence
Most of Victoria's distribution capacity sits in a corridor running through Truganina, Derrimut, Laverton North, Altona, Somerton and Epping. We are based in Williams Landing, inside that corridor, which is why warehousing is a significant share of our work and why our travel charge to these sites is minimal.
-
Driver and booking verification
Identity and booking checked against the schedule before entry.
-
Load checked against the docket
On exit, which is the check that actually prevents the loss.
-
Vehicle registration and times
In and out, recorded.
-
A record you can reconcile against
When a discrepancy appears three weeks later, the gate register is usually the only evidence that exists.
