What does a security guard actually do on shift?
A security guard opens and checks your site, controls who comes in, patrols the areas cameras cannot cover, responds in the first minutes when something goes wrong, and writes up what happened before the shift ends. Fortress supplies licensed guards across Melbourne and regional Victoria, 24 hours a day, including weekends and public holidays.
Hiring a guard is usually a decision made under time pressure — after an incident, before an audit, or because a contract requires it. This page sets out what you actually get, what moves the price, and what to check before you sign with anyone.
Victoria requires two licences, and most buyers verify only one. The business must hold a Private Security Business Licence. The individual officer must hold a Private Security Individual Licence with the right endorsement. Both are verifiable with Victoria Police.
The endorsement matters more than people expect. Guarding and crowd control are separate. An officer endorsed for guarding is not permitted to work a licensed venue door, so if you are staffing a pub, a club or a ticketed event you need crowd control, not general guarding.
We would rather quote you the cheaper option and keep the account. If your risk sits in a few hours rather than across the whole night, mobile patrols cover more ground for less. If the site has a monitored alarm and no staff on it, alarm response may be all you need.

Opening checks
The officer walks the site, confirms doors, gates and plant are as they should be, and logs anything already wrong before the shift becomes responsible for it.
Access control
Who comes in, whether they should, and a record that they did. On most commercial sites this is the bulk of the job.
Scheduled patrols
Internal and external circuits at irregular intervals, scanning checkpoints that record a time and a GPS position.
The handover
A written record to you and a verbal brief to the next officer. This is where most providers fail — a guard who cannot tell you what happened is a guard you cannot use as evidence.
